Jets Draft Linebacker Francisco Mauigoa in Round 5

Francisco Mauigoa

The New York Jets continued to bolster their defense on Day 3 of the NFL Draft, selecting linebacker Francisco Mauigoa out of Miami with the 162nd overall pick.

Mauigoa is a downhill, physical linebacker who made a name for himself with the Hurricanes as a sure tackler and high-motor defender. Originally transferring to Miami from Washington State, Mauigoa quickly became a key part of the Canes’ defense, showing an ability to track the ball, shed blocks, and make plays in space.

At 6’3” and 230 pounds, Mauigoa fits the Jets mold of athletic, versatile linebackers who can contribute immediately on special teams and eventually work their way into the defensive rotation. With depth concerns at linebacker and a heavy focus on improving special teams units, Mauigoa looks like a smart, high-upside addition.

The Jets coaching staff values toughness, football IQ, and effort. Francisco Mauigoa checks all those boxes. He should be in the mix right away for special teams snaps, while developing under Jeff Ulbrich’s system.

Here’s a quick snapshot of Francisco Mauigoa’s college career:
