Morgan Moses spent two different stints with the Jets: a very successful year in 2021 when PFF ranked the team as the 11th best offensive line in football and then just now in 2024 where he got injured and then played through injury for a year where he once again improved the quality of the offensive line. With him given a clean bill of health by the Jets medical staff a few weeks ago I figured it was a lock to see him re-sign but I guess he has other plans.
Mike Garofalo reported that Morgan Moses signed a 3-year deal with $24 million with a chance to earn $28.5 million with the Patriots of all teams. The Patriots!? Does he have no honor?
It’s a sneaky good signing for the team that’s spent more money than any other team in the league today, as they protect their franchise QB Drake Maye with one of the more reliable tackles in the game. I think the Jets should’ve matched this offer and solidified their offensive line, but now they have to scramble to find a quality offensive tackle to complete a seemingly formidable starting 5 of paper.
Among names we’ve already heard are Matt Peart from the Broncos and Jedrick Wills Jr. from the Browns. Both of those guys are in their 20s while Moses just turned 34 last week so from a longevity standpoint perhaps it’s best to pick up one of these guys and try to have the same starting 5 for the next 3+ years in Olu Fashanu, John Simpson, Joe Tippmann, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and one of these guys. In order to do that, Simpson and AVT would both need extensions but I think having continuity and stability from the line will be huge as the team tries to find their identity under first-time head coach Aaron Glenn and first-time OC Tanner Engstrand
