NY Jets Beat the Giants; Mekhi Becton Named Starter at RT
The Snoopy Bowl, as it is called, went in the NY Jets favor this year; they beat the Giants 32 – 24. That means the preseason is over, and the team will now start preparing for the opener on September 11 against the Buffalo Bills. Aaron Rodgers saw his first preseason action, and it went well. After the game, Robert Saleh told the media that Mekhi Becton is officially the week one starter at right tackle.
Aaron Rodgers played two series on offense. The starting offensive line was on the field, minus Duane Brown. Rodgers was 5 of 8 for 47 yards and an incredible touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson. Garret had three catches for 30 yards and that touchdown. Michael Carter started at running back, with Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook sitting out.
The defense put pressure on the Giants QBs all game long as they ended the day with five sacks: Bryce Huff (1), Jermaine Johnson (1), Pita Taumoepenu (1), and Bruce Hector (2). Brandin Echols intercepted a pass by 3rd string QB Tommy DeVito and returned it 67 yards for a TD.
The Jets backup QB crew didn’t turn the ball over. Zach Wilson was 11 of 18 for 107 yards. Tim Boyle had a strong night, finishing 9 of 11 with 107 yards and 2 touchdown passes. Xavier Gipson had the kind of night all rookies want to have as the preseason winds down. He handled return duties and also had 7 catches for 79 yards.
The NFL changed things this year; there is only one cut-down day, and that is this week. The roster cut deadline for 2023 is Tuesday, August 29, at 4 PM ET. The Jets Roster will have to be reduced from 90 to 53.
