Douglas Dishes on Derek Carr, Quinnen Williams and Mekhi Becton
Jets GM Joe Douglas met with the media in Indianapolis yesterday and didn’t say a great deal, keeping key decisions close to the vest. However, the GM did offer a bit of insight in terms of where the team is with some key decisions.
In regards to the team’s meeting with free agent quarterback Derek Carr, Douglas praised Carr the person and the player, saying he’s “a phenomenal person” who is “very authentic, ultra-intelligent and very comfortable in his own skin”. In terms of what he team likes on the field, Douglas cited Carr’s “release, the velocity, the decision-making and the accuracy”, saying overall that there are “a lot of things to like”.
Douglas would not confirmed whether or not the team made Carr a contract offer, but said the team understands all available quarterbacks will have their own process and that Carr wants to take advantage of his first opportunity at being a free agent.
The Jets had a second meeting with Carr that owner Woody Johnson was apparently present for, which is not usually the case during the combine.

When asked about another pressing issue, the contract of superstar defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, Douglas said the team has spoken with Williams and his agent since the end of the season and feels “really good” about where the two parties are.

The future of tackle Mekhi Becton also came up and there were no surprises there. The trimmed down offensive tackle has missed two years due to injury but appears ready to go with year four on the horizon. However, because of the injuries, the team almost certainly won’t’ exercise his fifth-year option but Douglas played coy and says the team has not yet decided.
Douglas also spoke briefly about quarterback Zach Wilson and said the team still has “a very high ceiling” despite his first two years “not playing out the way we had hoped”.
