It’s that time of year, Jets fans. When dreams are made or crushed as NFL teams trim down from 80 personnel to 53 in the coming days. For the Jets, some position groups will be tougher than others, but we’ll give it our best guess as to who stays and who goes. And even then, we know that the bottom 3 or 4 guys on the roster could be let go soon after cut down to make room for a player let go from another club.
QB: 2
Zach Wilson, Mike White
No surprises here as the Jets keep White while also keeping an eye on the waiver wire.
Practice squad: James Morgan
RB: 4
Ty Johnson, Tevin Coleman, Michael Carter, La’Mical Perine
A deep group with plenty of speed and Perine as the thumper. Johnson should be the day 1 starter but that remains to be seen.
FB: 1
Trevon Wesco
The Jets offense will call for a fullback and Wesco has done a respectable job as a FB who can play some TE.
WR: 7
Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Jamison Crowder, Keelan Cole, Denzel Mims, Vyncint Smith, Braxton Berrios
The Jets keep seven receivers out of this talented and explosive group. Davis and Moore have the potential to be one of the best duos the team has ever fielded.
Practice Squad: Lawrence Cager, Jeff Smith
TE: 3
Tyler Kroft, Chris Herndon, Kenny Yeboah
Kroft beat out Herndon for the top spot and nobody else on the roster is on Herdon’s level as an overall player so he sticks.
OL: 9
Mekhi Becton, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Connor McGovern, Greg Van Roten, Morgan Moses, George Fant, Jimmy Murray, Chuma Edoga, Dan Feeney.
If not for the $3 mil cap hit he would incur, we’d have Feeney being shown the door but if and when the starting five are healthy, they could be a very good group if Vera-Tucker is as good as advertised. Both Moses and Fant may end up starting games at right tackle by season’s end.
Practice Squad: Grant Hermanns
DL: 8
Bryce Huff, Quinnen Williams, Sheldon Rankins, John Franklin-Myers, Foley Fatukasi, Ronald Blair, Hamilcar Rashed, Jonathan Marshall.
The Jets could still use an established pass rusher but those guys don’t grow on trees. Jabari Zuniga hasn’t shown enough to hang around.
LB: 5
Hamsah Nasirildeen, CJ Mosley, Jamien Sherwood, Blake Cashman, Noah Dawkins
A young group with Nasirildeen and Sherwood making the move from college safety to day 1 staring outside linebackers while Sherwood steps in for the injured Jarrad Davis.
CB: 7
Bryce Hall, Brandin Echols, Javelin Guidry, Bless Austin, Jason Pinnock, Michael Carter II, Justin Hardee
Not much experience in this group but some promising film from Hall, Echols and Guidry between this year and last.
S: 4
Marcus Maye, Lamarcus Joyner, Ashtyn Davis, Sharrod Neasman
Davis is banged up but should be back within the first few weeks of the season while Maye and Joyner are locked in to start.
Specialists: 3
P Braden Mann, K Matt Ammendola, LS Thomas Hennessy
