News of the Jets retaining cornerback Darryl Roberts earlier this week came as little surprise to Jets fans as the 3-year veteran was enjoying his best season as a pro before former head coach Todd Bowles moved him over to play safety in the second half of the season.
What may have come as a surprise were the terms of the deal as it is now being reported by Darryl Slater of NJ Advanced Media that Roberts signed a 3-year/$21 million pact. It’s a pay raise that certainly means the Jets are expecting Roberts to be more than just a spot starter.
With Trumaine Johnson hoping for a bounce-back season under Gregg Williams, the Jets still need a number two corner as the team is prepared to allow Morris Claiborne to depart as a free agent. Could it be that the Jets are toying with the idea of allowing Roberts to start, or to at least audition for Gregg Williams to earn the starting nod?
It would seem to make sense, and why not? Even with all of their salary cap space, the Jets need to find a few players who can contribute in key spots without commanding top dollar.
