Jets Decline Option on Pennel
With a deadline looming to pick up a roster bonus on defensive lineman Mike Pennel, the Jets today declined the option, meaning Pennel will become a free agent.
The Jets are not picking up the option for the final two years of DT Mike Pennel’s contract, per source. Today was the deadline to decide on an option bonus worth $1M, while Pennel is now headed to the open market as a free agent.

Pennel has been a solid player for Gang Green over the past two seasons, but with the team expected to switch to a 4-3 base defense, there was little need for a nose tackle of Pennel’s stature. The move will save the Jets $1.6 million while also taking on $1.6 million in dead money according to overthecap.com.
