Jamal Adams Calls his Shot; Safety, 2 Others Headed to Pro Bowl

It’s not all that common that you hear an NFL player tell the rest of the league that he’ll be heading to the pro bowl before the season even kicks off, but second-year Jets safety Jamal Adams has done just that.  Adams is heading to the Pro Bowl along with Kicker Jason Myers and return man Andre Roberts.

It was roughly a year ago when Adams didn’t make the Pro Bowl as a rookie when he proclaimed it would be “the last time” he didn’t make it.  A bold proclamation for a rookie, but one that’s off to a good start.

Adams has become one of the league’s elite defenders in his second season as he has excelled in every aspect of the game despite being asked to play variety of positions.  Todd Bowles likes to use Adams down inside the box, as an edge rusher, free safety, slot corner and from time to time, a boundary corner.

According to Pro Football Focus, in all of those roles, Adams had earned the fourth-highest pass coverage grade of any safety in the NFL, and allowed the fifth-lowest quarterback rating at 53.7 while leading all safeties in defensive stops with 37.  Adams has also tacked on 12 passes defended, three forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks and an interception.  A truly invaluable chess piece who is already among the league’s very best.

Meanwhile, Myers has been an absolute steal for the Jets at place kicker as he was signed just before the start of the season and has hit on 31 of 33 field goal attempts, including 6 for 7 on kicks of 50 yards or more.

Meanwhile, Roberts finally brought the Jets return game back to life after years of stagnation, averaging a career high 14.9 yards per punt return to go along with one touchdown.  Roberts also has an opportunity to post 1,000 yards as a kick returner as he currently sits at 912 yards with two games to play.
