Two weeks ago, after losing to the Vikings, Jet’s safety Jamal Adams made an impassioned plea to the Jet’s locker room that they didn’t want to wind up like last season when things went from bad to worse. The Jets were 3-4 last season too, and then went off the rails, losing 7 of their final 9 games to finish up at 5-11. Now, fans are scared the team is trending in the same direction after losing 3 in a row since beating the Colts, to fall to 3-6. They are only above the Bills, who they are playing Sunday. Next season, when Josh Allen and Sam Darnold are in their second seasons (and Darnold is actually playing, Allen might) this rivalry could become something really special and fun to watch. This Sunday, maybe not so much…
Even though Sam Darnold is listed as doubtful, he won’t play. Veteran Josh McCown will get the start Sunday. There is a chance Darnold suits up as QB #2, but if not they will bring up ex-Giant Davis Webb to backup McCown. With Darnold struggling in recent weeks, this could actually be a good thing. He will now have 2 weeks (with the bye) to heal, retool, and practice. Also, McCown’s veteran leadership and decision making could get the offense clicking and confident for when Darnold returns.
Robby Anderson and Spencer Long missed every practice this week, so both are doubtful. Losing Anderson takes away the deep threat, which may not be as big a deal for Darnold but as fans remember he was one of McCown’s favorite targets last season. McCown will have Quincy Enunwa who before his injury was playing like a #1 WR so that is excellent news, but just keep in mind not having Anderson is a bigger deal for McCown than Darnold.
Spencer Long has been bad since his injuries, and only mediocre before them, so losing him may not be as big a deal as it seems. Jonotthan Harrison will get the start at center if Long doesn’t play, and he has been serviceable in his place.
Steve McLendon was limited Friday after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday so if he can’t go, expect to see increased reps for Mike Pennel.
