So far, so Good; Jets’ McCown Impressed by Darnold Early on
During their decades-long search for a long-term quarterback, Josh McCown has been one of the many veteran signal callers the Jets have turned to as a stop gap measure. A seasoned veteran, the 37 year old McCown knows he is not the future of the organization, and that has translated in to an ideal situation for Gang Green.
Over the weekend, McCown appeared on Sirius XM NFL Radio, and when discussing Darnold, had this to say, “With Sam, we have the right guy, he’s wired the right way, he loves the game, he asks the right questions and he’s willing to work. That’s the foundation, you have to have that,” For any Jets fans who were listening, it was great to hear from McCown, who knows a thing or two about what it takes to last in the NFL.
Without knowing who the week 1 starter will be, these are the kinds of quotes Jet fans can get excited about, and McCown isn’t the only one who has been impressed by Darnold thus far. Head Coach Todd Bowles said recently to reporters, “Josh (McCown) will start come training camp and we will see what happens at the end of training camp,” suggesting that unlike year’s past, the Jets will have a legitimate quarterback competition in 2018, with Darnold having a very real chance to win it.
Even with Darnold currently being the number three guy on the QB depth chart behind McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, there’s clearly strong support from the veteran quarterback and head coach, which could make all the difference. Darnold has continued to impress Jeremy Bates and Todd Bowles throughout the summer, and with camp beginning on July 29th, we can only wait and see if McCown was right about the rook.
