Jets second-year running back Eli McGuire earned our praises last season right here, but that’s nothing compared to the praise that was heaped on him today by running backs coach Stump Mitchell according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.
When asked about the versatile McGuire, Mitchell reportedly said the back reminds him of former San Diego Chargers and Jets running back Ladanian Tomlinson. Those are some strong words from a guy who has been coaching running backs in the NFL since 1999.
McGuire will never be the player Tomlinson was and Mitchell isn’t really making the prediction either. It’s an accurate observation on his part, highlighting the fact that McGuire can do it all. He’s a good runner, receiver and blocker. The former sixth-round pick is hoping for an expanded role in 2018. It sounds like he may get his wish if Mitchell has his way.
