No Mo; Bowles Deactivates Wilkerson, DE Will not Make Trip to New Orleans

Are the New York Jets finally getting it right with the Mo Wilkerson situation?  Weeks after the team should have pulled the plug on the overpaid/under-performing defensive lineman, Todd Bowles may be thinking “better late than never”.

Bowles has announced that Wilkerson will not travel with the team and it is the coach’s decision, not an injury to the former first-round pick.

Sans a handful of games this season, Wilkerson has been largely ineffective while showing little to no effort.  The thought of benching him was brought up on the JetNation forums right here two months ago as an injury to Wilkerson would mean the Jets would be stuck with him for all of next season with an almost $20 million cap hit.

If the Jets are in fact finally doing the right thing with Wilkerson, he should have played his final game as a Jet with the team standing to  save $17 million against the cap next season.

Update:

It appears Wilkerson’s deactivation was due to yet another incident in which he was late to the team facility according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.
