After yet another loss yesterday to the Miami Dolphins in which the New York Jets (5-7) offense was completely inept it appears the team will stick with rookie Geno Smith as the starting quarterback in their upcoming game against the Oakland Raiders.
Smith is 21 of 55 for 259 yards, 38% completions, 0 touchdowns and 6 interceptions with a quarterback rating of 14 over his last three games. During that stretch he has been benched twice in favor of Matt Simms including being pulled at halftime of yesterday’s game where Smith was 4 of 10 for 29 yards 1 interception and a rating of 8.3.
The Jets were 5-4 after a stunning victory over the New Orleans Saints and were heading into their bye week controlling their own playoff fate. The team has lost three straight since coming off the bye being outscored 79-20 in those matchups.
It was thought that backup quarterback Matt Simms or veteran David Garrard might get the start against the Raiders given Smith’s struggles. The Jets once promising playoff hopes have faded fast and a loss on Sunday will all but eliminate them from the postseason. Given the way Smith has played of late it is hard to see the offense being very effective on Sunday.
