Geno Smith On The Buffalo Bills

New York Jets

Geno SmithGeno Smith spoke to the media today and here is what he had to say about the Buffalo Bills.

On whether he’s talked to Rex Ryan about Buffalo’s defense…
Yes, so I’ve talked to Rex and they play a similar style to us. (They) like to attack the quarterback. They’ll try and confuse me and send some looks I probably haven’t seen before. But for the most part, watching them on tape, they do mix it up. Multiple fronts. Multiple blitzes. It’s going to take some extra preparation. I’ve got to be able to see it out there on the field, see everything clearly. I’ve been watching a ton of tape. I’ll be here all night and tomorrow watching tape. So, I’ll be prepared for it.

On whether it has any meaning going up against E.J. Manuel…
It’s about the Bills and the Jets. That’s it. I know the storyline’s going to be two rookie quarterbacks competing, but at the end of the day it’s about this team. It’s about us going out there and winning the game as a team.

On whether he got to know Manuel during the draft process…
Yeah, we talked a little. He’s a great guy.

On whether facing the team’s defense in practice will prepare him for facing the Buffalo defense…
Yeah, I think that’s already helped me. Seeing those fronts and the blitzes and the looks that I got up in Cortland and my time here was beneficial in many ways because it made me process things faster. It allows me to go out there on the field with a ton of confidence knowing that if you can move the ball against this defense, which is a great defense, then you can go up against anyone.

On finishing drives and scoring when the offense gets into the redzone…
Yeah that’s a big emphasis, us finishing drives. In our first two games we were able to move the ball pretty well, but got into the redzone, got some opportunities and kind of stalled a bit. All it takes is a little bit of extra focus down there. It could be me just reminding guys, ‘Hey, we’re in the redzone, let’s punch this thing in.’ We’re definitely going to emphasize that. We want to score more points. We can. I believe we can be an explosive offense and it’s going to take all 11 of us on the field.

On whether his ankle is back to 100 percent healthy…
It’s getting there day-by-day. Not quite 100 (percent) yet, but it’ll be there soon.

On how to avoid forcing throws when the game is on the line…
You’ve got to do it. You can’t have those mistakes. You can’t have those turnovers and regardless of whose fault it is, it can’t happen. The way to avoid it is to emphasize it in practice (and) to stick to your fundamentals when you’re out there on the field. Just go out there and play aggressive, but at the same time be mindful of the situation. I think down there in the redzone, I could’ve maybe tucked the ball and ran instead of trying to fit it into a tight window. Keep three points on the board (and) just managing the situations, continuing to stick to my fundamentals and just going out there being aggressive and having fun.

On if him running the ball is a goal of his moving forward…
My goal is to take what the defense gives me. I do have the ability to run. In those times, if need be, I got to tuck the ball down and run. Along with that, comes not turning the ball over, not making mistakes and also giving us a better opportunity. We may pick up a first down or we can get extra yards for the kicker
