Reports that Jets running back Mike Goodson was arrested early Friday morning on drugs and weapons charges were confirmed by New Jersey State Police spokesman Stephen Jones to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
According to police, Goodson and another man were stopped in the left-center lane of Interstate 80 West in Denville, New Jersey and were discovered by a tow truck driver. The driver called 911 when he saw Goodson, in the passenger seat, not looking well. Goodson was taken to and later discharged from St. Clare’s Hospital. Both Goodson and the driver were intoxicated, and a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun were allegedly found in the vehicle.
Goodson, 25, was charged with unlawful possession of a loaded handgun, possession of a hollow joint bullet, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, and possession of paraphernalia. The driver, 31 year old Garant Evans, faces an additional DWI charge, traffic summonses, and possession of a weapon with a prior felony conviction. Goodson was taken to a Morristown jail and held on $50,000 cash bail. Evans is being held on $150,000 bail.
This past March, the Jets signed Goodson to a 3 year, $6.9 million deal. Goodson had previously played for the Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers. He was expected to compete for a spot in the Jets running back rotation.
A Jets team spokesperson said, “We are aware of the report and are gathering information.”
