Revis To I.R.: Allen Activated

When Darrelle Revis got injured

, the Jets had held out hope that he could come back for the Super Bowl.  Well for a variety of reasons, the Jets no longer feel that is a realistic possibility.  From ESPN NY:

Coach Rex Ryan said Darrelle Revis will have surgery on his torn ACL on Thursday, and the Jets placed the cornerback on season-ending injured reserve.

“I know I had said before about Darrelle that I’d like to wait for him to have surgery before we placed him on IR or not,” Ryan said Friday. “Unfortunately with that time situation, you’ve had Eric Smith being out this week, we’re going to need that roster spot.”

Here is the official announcement from the NY Jets.

October 12, 2012 — The New York Jets have placed CB Darrelle Revis on injured reserve with a torn left ACL and have signed S Antonio Allen from the practice squad. The announcements were made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Revis (5-11/198/Pittsburgh/Aliquippa, PA) joined the Jets as the 14th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. In his career, he has started all 79 games he has played, registering 325 tackles, 19 interceptions and 102 passes defensed. A five-year veteran, he earned three All-Pro selections and four Pro-Bowl appearances, including the last three seasons as a starter. He was also voted team MVP twice in the last three seasons by his teammates.

Allen (S/6-1/210/South Carolina/Ocala, FL) entered the NFL as a seventh-round selection by the Jets in the 2012 NFL draft. He was waived following the preseason (09/01/12) and signed to the practice squad (09/02/12). In four seasons at South Carolina, Allen started 31-of-50 games, recording 198 tackles, including 20 for a loss, four interceptions and six forced fumbles.
