NY Jets Training Camp Report 08/03
The Jets practice at Cortland today was closed to the public, but the press was still around to give us a picture of what was going on.
The offense wore the black jerseys today, but looked “lethargic” according to Brian Costello at the Daily News. The offense got to wear the black jerseys for outplaying the defense on Thursday, but the defense dominated them today.
According to Rich Cimini over at ESPN New York, the running game looks really good, but the passing game has a long way to go. Final QB stats on the day from Jenny Vrentas at the Newark Star Ledger:
Sanchez finishes 5-for-12 with a TD and a sack in 11-on-11 today. Tebow 3-for-6. No 2min for Tebow. #nyj

And it wasn’t just Cimini who thought the offense didn’t look so good.
Offense very frustrated today. Lots of words from the Westhoff vernacular. Tebow mad at himself after a few throws. #nyj

Jets offense looks awful today. #nyj

Maybe the reason the passing offense is struggling is because it’s pretty beat up, particularly the receiving corps. Santonio Homes sat out of practice again today.
No Santonio Holmes in team drills again #nyj

Santonio Holmes not in team drills. I guess he's still generally sore. #Jets

…but was running on the sidelines and looked okay, so it sounds like he should be back pretty soon.
Holmes runs a couple of sprints off to side. He generally looked decent. #Jets

Running back Bilal Powell, who had a forgettable rookie year, is really showing his stuff at camp.
#JH Great screen pass from Sanchez to RB Bilal Powell for big gain.

"Bilal Powell is in great shape. It seems like every day he has a nice run. You're really starting to see why we took him." – Rex

A couple of days after cornerback Antonio Cromartie made another media splash with his comment of “I’m the second best wide receiver on the team,” he lined up with the second string offense:
Cromartie lined up at WR in 7 on 7 with Tebow at QB #nyj

Rookie Stephen Hill, who’d had a big start to camp, has faded a bit:
Rookie WR Stephen Hill has disappeared after a fast start to camp. #Jets

The first team scrimmage is tomorrow from 6 to 9 PM, according to Rex Ryan:
Rex says scrimmage schedule will be identical to past years. First team O vs first team D, etc. scrimmage tomorrow from 6-9 pm #nyj
— Manish Mehta (@MMehtaSports) August 3, 2012
And finally, with President Obama saying if he were a Jet fan he’d be nervous about the team’s QB situation yesterday, Rex (for once) did not take the bait:
Rex says scrimmage schedule will be identical to past years. First team O vs first team D, etc. scrimmage tomorrow from 6-9 pm #nyj
— Manish Mehta (@MMehtaSports) August 3, 2012
For all Rex talks, he definitely knows where to draw the line. Of course, Cromartie had to weigh in:
Cromartie on Obama comments: "We don’t have a 2-QB system. We have a 1-QB system & that’s with Mark. Jets fans shouldn’t be worried at all"
