The New York Jets sent out this press release today about High School football coach John Wagner (Point Pleasant Beach) being named coach of the week. Normally we don’t publish these but I saw this team play this year and was very impressed with their turn-around. Excellent job all around by the coach and kids in that program.
November 9, 2011 — The New York Jets announced today that John Wagner of Point Pleasant Beach (N.J.) High School has been named this week’s recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Wagner will receive $1,000 to benefit the school’s football program and will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
The award, in its 16th year, is given to coaches in the tristate area who serve the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Coach Wagner is in his first year as head coach of the Garnet Gulls and in his 31st year overall. Wagner previously coached at Roselle Park High School for 25 years. During this time, his teams won back-to-back undefeated state championships in 1992-’93, fourteen winning seasons and nine state playoff appearances. Coach Wagner has amassed an overall coaching record of 156-92-2.
On Friday, Point Pleasant defeated Spotswood Chargers, 38-7 to improve to 6 -2 on the year. This is the Garnet Gulls first winning season in 14 years and their first time in the playoffs since 2001. They will face the New Egypt Warriors in the opening round of the playoffs on Friday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m.
