Jets Miss Out On Asomugha; Re-sign Smith, Turner
Nnamdi to Philly- On Friday All-Pro defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha signed a 5-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, spurning offers from both the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys. The Jets worked diligently to sign Asomugha, including restructuring several contracts to create additional cap space, but in the end Nnamdi believed that the Eagles were better prepared to win a Super Bowl.
Not being able to land Nnamdi is disappointing, but it started to seem like the Jets were going to give up too much to sign the star cornerback. Gang Green has several holes to fill and the team may be better off addressing a variety of other positions with the cap space that has been created. Then again that is contingent on the Jets ability to sign a quality defensive back to play opposite Darrelle Revis.
Smith re-signs with Jets- According to several published reports the New York Jets have signed safety Eric Smith to a 3-year deal. The deal is reportedly worth $7.5 million dollars, including a $800,000 signing bonus. This is a smart move by Gang Green as Smith is not only a solid safety, but a very good special teams player as well.
Jets re-sign Turner- CBSSports.com is reporting that the Jets have re-signed offensive lineman Robert Turner to a one-year deal. Turner was a restricted free agent and gives the Jets much needed depth on the offensive line.
Gang Green signs 5 rookies- On Friday the New York Jets signed 5 rookies (3 draft picks): RB Bilal Powell, QB Greg McElroy, WR Scotty McKnight, OL Curtis Duron (undrafted FA), and CB Jeremy McGee (undrafted FA).
Jets set to re-sign Brunell- According to Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News the Jets will be re-signing quarterback Mark Brunell. The Jets released Mark on Friday to create cap space during the Nnamdi drama, and will now bring him back for the veteran minimum.
Coleman to the Jags- Defensive back Drew Coleman has signed a 3-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coleman made some big plays for the Jets defense in 2010, and now Gang Green will look to players like Marquice Cole and Kyle Wilson to fill his role.
Gholston to the Bears- Fan Favorite Vernon Gholston has signed with the Chicago Bears.
Weatherford out, Bryan in- On Friday former Jets punter Steve Weatherford signed with the New York Giants. The Jets with only punter TJ Conley on the roster went out and signed Chris Bryan to a deal. Bryan played last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4 games) and has played in the Australian Football League (Ben Graham anyone?).
Jets waive Ainge, O’Connell- On Friday the New York Jets announced that the team has waived quarterbacks Erik Ainge and Kevin O’Connell. I would not be surprised to see the Jets bring back O’Connell at some point.
