On Saturday Jeremy Kerley, the New York Jets fifth round pick, addressed the media. Here is the transcript courtesy of the Jets.
On how it felt being drafted by the Jets…
It feels great. It’s a great weight lifted off my shoulders. I’m ready to get going and then do whatever I can to help the team.
On whether he thinks the team brought him in to play right away…
I don’t know, but (I’m looking forward to) just being able to come in and take a look at the guys like Santonio (Holmes) and Jerricho (Cotchery). I’m ready to be a student of the game and ready to just take whatever criticism they have to give to me.
On how he would describe himself as a player…
I’m definitely a special teams guy. I know that my special teams ability is definitely what makes me the player that I am.
On his role on special teams…
(I played) kick returner and punt returner.
On working with Coach Mike Westhoff …
I’m definitely looking forward to it. Any criticism is good criticism, so I’m ready to be a student. I’m ready to go in and try to do as much learning as I can.
On how much interest he saw from the Jets during the draft process…
I had a great workout for them when they came down and they worked me out. Ever since then, I’ve thought in the back of my mind, ‘Maybe, somewhere down that line, it could be.’ I’m just glad it was today.
On who came down from the Jets…
The offensive coordinator (Coach Brian Schottenheimer).
On what wide receiver position he played at in college…
(I played) slot receiver, mainly.
On whether he thinks he can play other wide receiver positions…
Yes, sir. I was only limited to the slot because that’s where my team needed me. I didn’t complain about my position. I just played it. If I’m needed on the outside, I’m ready and I’m willing to play on the outside.
On how he thinks it benefits him to come from a winning program like TCU…
Discipline. We were so disciplined that winning eventually came naturally to us. When you’re a disciplined team and you can do what your coach wants you to do, the right things will happen to you. That’s what I’m looking to do at the next level.
