A look at the NY Jets by the numbers

Now that everyone has had a chance to dry off and get some sleep lets take a look at some interesting New York Jets statistics.

1) Jets offensive line one of the best- Heading into the 2010 season many were worried about how the offensive line would perform without left guard Alan Faneca, who was released. Well after 5 games the Jets o-line is statistically one of the best in the business.  Check out some of the offensive numbers:

• Has only allowed 10 QB hits, which is the best in the NFL
• Has allowed only 7 sacks, which has them tied for 5th in the NFL.
• Tied for 2nd in the NFL with 5.1 rushing yards per attempt.
• Have the number #1 rushing attack in the NFL averaging 165.2 yards per game.
• Have 9 receiving touchdowns with 4 rushing, which is interesting considering the Jets ground and pound philosophy.
• Ranked 3rd in the NFL in scoring, averaging 27 points per game.
• The Jets are +11 (first in the NFL) in the give away/take away department with only one lost fumble and no interceptions

Fun Fact about Mark Sanchez (courtesy of the NFL): Sanchez has eight touchdowns versus zero interceptions in 2010 and joins former Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde (2001) as the only quarterbacks since 1970 to have started each of their team’s first five games without throwing an interception a season after recording 20-plus interceptions.

2) Tomlinson amongst league leaders– The Jets LaDainian Tomlinson ranks 5th in the NFL (3rd in the AFC) in rushing with 435 yards.  Not so bad for a guy who many thought had nothing left in the tank.  For his career LT needs 75 yards rushing to reach 13,000.  One game note: Tomlinson has 20 career touchdowns against the Broncos, 19 rushing and 1 receiving.

3) Jets defense by the numbers:

• Ranked 6th in the NFL in terms of points allowed, giving up 16.2 a game.
• Ranked 11th in the NFL in terms of yards allowed with 313.6
• Tied for 7th in the NFL with 12 sacks
• Tied for first in the NFL with 7 fumbles recovered.
• 4th in the NFL in rush defense giving up only 79 yards per game.

4) Special teams numbers:

• Nick Folk is tied for the league lead with 12 field goals made (12/14)
• Brad Smith is ranked 7th in the NFL averaging 32.2 yards on kickoff returns.
• Punter Steve Weatherford is ranked 9th in the NFL with 44.9 yards per kick.  Weatherford is ranked 8th in the NFL with a net of 39.7.

As you can see the Jets are doing pretty well statistically in all 3 phases of the game: offense,defense, and special teams.  These numbers will only look to improve as Gang Green takes on some of the lesser teams in the NFL like the Browns and Lions.

Word on Revis: This is quickly becoming a lost season for Darrelle Revis as his hamstring injury has limited his ability to play.  While I understand the Jets wanting to get the playmaker on the field, at this point they are much better off keeping him out until after the bye week.   It is clear that Revis is uncomfortable playing with the injury, so for all parties involved lets just get the All-Pro back to a hundred percent.

In the meantime it would be nice to see Revis shut his mouth about other players until he can actually get back on the field to defend them.
