Jets Cut Coles; Trim Roster To 75

In a surprise move, the New York Jets cut WR Laveranues Coles today.  Coles was signed to be an early season replacement for Santonio Holmes, who is suspended the first 4 weeks of the season.  During the preseason Coles had 4 receptions for 19 yards.

As perJ.P. Pelzman

There won’t officially be a third tour of duty for WR Laveranues Coles, released by the Jets today after only four catches for 19 yards during the preseason. Coles had talked last week about how some of his teammates had been telling him he’s still got it, but evidently the Jets felt differently. The Jets also cut WRs Marcus Henry and Aundrae Allison and DL Rodrique Wright. These moves got the Jets’ roster down to 75.

J.P. also added that the Jets could bring Coles back in week 2.  They just didn’t want to guarantee his veteran salary for the whole year, which would have happened if Coles was on the week one roster.

Just had conference call with coach Rex Ryan, and he said it’s a ‘real possibility’ that WR Laveranues Coles, released today could return after the first game of the regular season. Translation: the Jets wouldn’t have to pay him for the whole season if he’s not on the opening-day roster. But they don’t have any ‘cash-flow’ problems. Uh-huh.

I have to wonder how much these disappointing PSL sales are impacting football operations.  More importantly how much these additional advertisements are hurting operations.  Had the Jets priced PSLs at a reasonable level and not needed a staff of 20+, things could be different.

Oh well back to the roster, the Jets have to cut the roster down to 75 by August 31st.  The final roster must be at 53 on September 4.  Looks like Hard Knocks just got a lot more interesting with the Coles move.

You can read more about these moves in the Jet Nation forum, here is the discussion thread.
