The trial for ex-Giants wideout Plaxico Burress has been pushed back once again. He is facing gun charges and the new court date is September 23, 2009. What does this mean? Well if you listen to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, it means that Plaxico will be able to play football this season.
“In talking to Plax’s attorney, his feeling is that a trial is not going to take place until after the season,” Rosenhaus said. “He believes that after all these delays — again, Plax hasn’t been indicted yet, either — it’s going to be a very lengthy process to get to trial, and that will take place after the season.
“Our hope is, based on this information, that he will be able to play unobstructed this year, without having a trial, and he can get a season in and then deal with the legal issues after the season,” Rosenhaus said. “This is the hope, and this what I’m communicating to the rest of the NFL teams.”
The Jets have a glaring need at wide receiver. Jerrico Cotchery is the only proven commodity. There is some upside with the younger players (Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney). Not many people would argue that Plaxico wouldn’t make the Jets a better team.
Plaxico was the kind of player that Eric Mangini avoided. Rex Ryan seems more interested in assembling talent instead of choir boys, so this could get interesting. Expect the talk about Plax to the Jets to continue in the coming days.
