Jets Week Three Report Card
By Joe GrinwisÂ
JETS-28 Bills-20
Quarterback: B+
Pennington (19-29, 183 yards, TD)
Pennington hit Coles in key situations for first downs and didn’t make any mistakes. Managing the game today was the key and Chad did that well.
Running Back:Â C+
Barlow (12 carries, 31 yards TD)
Houston (2 carries, 10 yards TD)
Washington (7 carries, 25 yards – 2 receptions, 52 yards)
The running game finally got going with 74 yards on 24 carries which opened it enough for play action fakes by Pennington & Leon Washington made some nifty moves on a 2nd quarter reception which went 47 yards.
Wide Receivers:Â B
Coles (10 receptions, 78 yards)
Cotchery (3 receptions, 33 yards)
LC once again with another big day and Cotchery made a few nice catches as well. Whenever the Jets needed a completion or a 1st down, Coles was there as he continues to look like a Pro Bowl receiver through first three games of 2006. Oh and yes, he is a legit #1.
Tight End:Â C
Baker (3 receptions, 15 yards, TD)
Baker caught the lone TD pass from Pennington and of the other 2 receptions, 1 went for a 1st down.
Offensive Line:Â B
The running game finally got going a little bit with it’s best performance of the year and for the most part Pennington was not pressured. Good performance.
Defensive Line:Â C-
Not a lot of pressure from the line and Willis McGahee ran for 150 yards on 26 carries. Not good. The lone great play was Bobby Hamilton’s 9 yard sack of J.P. Losman late in the 4th quarter.
Linebackers:Â C+
Vilma, Barton, Hobson & Thomas were in on some pressure situations and big plays as well as a lot of tackles (as usual) of Willis McGahee. Hobson picked up a fumble by Losman and ran it in for a score and Vilma ups his record against former U of Miami teammate McGahee to 2-2.
Secondary:Â C
Kerry Rhodes is a beast. Two sacks, both recovered by the team and one was picked up by LB Victor Hobson for a TD. The secondary however covering Bills’ receivers Roscoe Parrish, Lee Evans & Peerles Price did a poor job. I mean, come on, J.P. Losman put up 328 on them. David Barrett did have a pick.
Special Teams:Â A-
Ben Graham had a few VERY nice punts, Nugent was 4-4 on Extra Points & Roscoe Parrish didn’t get any real good chance to return a punt.
Coaching:Â B+
The second half changes for stopping McGahee was huge & the offensive play calling was much better this week than last as Mangini & Co. win their 2nd game of the season.
