Small School Prospects

By R44

QB~ Erik Meyer ~ Eastern Washington–Small school superstar, who at 6’1′ may not have the physical skills to excel in the NFL. Threw for 31 TD’s in 2004. Travis Lulay of Montana State and former Florida Gators recruit Ingle Martin (Furman) are also top small school quarterbacks.

RB~ Travis Glasford ~ Western Illinois–Dual running and receiving threat from Miami, was the best D-1AA tailback in the 2004 junior class. Ran for 1,080 yards on 224 attempts and scored 11 TD’s. Also, he had 46 receptions for 464 yards as a junior, so he’s an all-around threat. Is looking to break every school running back record set by current NFL running back Aaron Stecker.

WR~ Kelvin Dickens Morgan State– Tall (6’3″), talented wide receiver, who is said to possess 4.3 40 speed. Had 47 receptions for 1019 yards 21.7 (avg) and 7 TD’s in 2004.

WR~ Felton Huggins ~ Southeastern Louisiana–Tall, lanky 6’4″, 180 pound wideout, who broke out in a major way in 2004, gaining an amazing 501 yards on 24 receptions in his first 2 games as a junior. For the entire 2004 season, he had 84 receptions for 1,313 and 13 TD’s.

WR ~ James Vernon – Southern–6′, 185 pound speedster, who hauled in 56 receptions for 730 yards and 6 TD’s in 2004. If he can come back strong as senior and run well at workouts, he may be draft worthy.

TE~ Corey Roberts ~Sam Houston–6’5″, 235 pound tight end, excels as a receiver more than a blocker.

OL~ Chris Kuper ~ North Dakota–6’4″, 320 pound guard has gained a ton of attention from NFL teams already. May be the best Division 2 prospect in America.

OL~ Chad Motte ~ Georgia Southern–Huge interior lineman, who has been a true star at the D-1AA level. Is standout as run blocker for GSU, which prefers to keep the ball on the ground. But agile and athletic enough to improve his quarterback protection skills.

OL- Jeff Bolton ~Montana State– 6’4″ 322 pound guard/tackle could be the best D1-AA lineman in America.

OL- Paul McQuistan Weber State–6’5″, 320 pound tackle has been dominate at the D1-AA level. Displayed a 33″ vertical and did 30 225 pound bench presses at a recent Pro Day. Could be a rising star in the making?

OL~ Jhari Evans ~ Bloomsburg– Is a huge, 6’4″ and 340 pound Division 2 standout. Was first team D-2 All-American. Evans will need a big season and great workouts to be drafted from a small D-2 school.

DE~ Brady Forsmark ~ Weber State– Probably the best defensive line prospect on the small school level. The 6’3″, 255-pound defensive end will need to add some weight, but he’s got excellent athletic ability. Was named the 2004 Big Sky Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year and has a 51 tackles for losses and 25 sacks in 3 seasons.

DT~ Fred Evans ~ Texas State– Huge, 6’5″ 300 pound run-stopper can also push the pocket a bit. Decent prospect, who will need a big season to be drafted. Cousin of baseball player Gary Matthews Jr.

DE~ Chris Gocong ~ Cal Poly– 6’3″, 255 pounder had a tremendous 2004 season for Poly, registering 21.5 tackles for losses and 14.5 sacks. May need to bulk up a bit to make the jump to the NFL.

LB~ William Freeman ~ Furman– 6’2″, 219 pound linebacker, who makes up for his lack of ideal size for a linebacker, with outstanding speed and athletic ability. Considered a Division 1-AA All-American by most sources in 2004. Had 86 tackles (9.5 for losses) and 4.5 sacks in 2004. Looks like a very draftable NFL prospect, if he can add some bulk to his frame.

LB~Anthony Gargiulo ~ Dartmouth– At 6’3″ and 235 pounds, Gargiulo has dominated the Ivy League as defensive end with blinding speed coming off the edges. Despite constant double teams, led the league in sacks with 12 in 2004. Will be coached by former Stanford head coach Buddy Teevens, who has experience turning players into NFL prospects. At his size, will need to show 3-4 outside linebacker speed to be drafted, which is possible.

LB~ Marcus Mikulec ~ Sam Houston State–Left high school as 180 pound athlete with speed, is now a full-fledged Division 1-AA superstar at 245 pounds, who flys around, sideline to sideline, wreaking havoc on his opponents. At 6’2″, is said to run in the 4.5 40 area–very similar to recent D1-AA prospect James “Boomer” Grigsby from Illinois State, except Mikulec is taller.

LB~ Shane MacIntyre~ Montana– Is a 6’3′ and 222 pound outside linebacker that excels in coverage at his level. Can also chase down the quarterback when asked to blitz. Had 94 tackles (12 for losses) and 2 interceptions in 2004. Even as a D-1AA prospect, has already been added to several major college award watch lists. Will need to add more bulk and show outstanding speed to be drafted.

CB/S~ Shannon James ~ Massachusetts–5’10”, 196 pound defensive back, who is a true D-1AA superstar. Registered 75 tackles and collected 8 interceptions for the Minutemen in 2004. Decent prospect, who will need to show excellent speed to improve his draft ranking.

FS~ Kevin Edwards ~ Montana– 6’2″, 200 pounder has the size and speed to excel at the 1-AA level at cornerback. He dominated opponents in 2004, collecting 6 interceptions and playing stoutly against the run. If he runs fast enough (sub 4.5), could be a taller version of Ohio State’s Dustin Fox, who will be tried at safety at the NFL level. Not an elite 1-AA prospect like Gordon and Pittman, but well worth watching.

CB~ Cletis Gordon ~ Jackson State–Probably the best small school prospect going into the upcoming season. Not only does Gordon have great speed as a cornerback (solid 4.4), he’s got excellent size at 6’3″. Great special teams player, who is a star kick and punt returner.

CB~David Pittman ~ Northwestern State– 5’11”, 175 pound speedster, who is said to possess 4.46 speed. May be a notch below Gordon at this point, but looks a like a very draftable prospect, due to his raw size and speed.
