2006 DRAFT REVIEW: NEW YORK JETS

(1-4) D’Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia: Started all 16 games at left tackle.  Played well overall but had some weak games against top competition.  Had trouble keeping weight on as the season progressed.  Solid player with a great future.  Grade: B+

(1-29) Nick Mangold, C, Ohio State: Started all 16 games at center as a rookie.  Quickly adjusted to making line calls and was more consistent than Ferguson but may not have as much upside.  Should start for years to come.  Grade: A

(2-49 Kellen Clemens, QB, Oregon: Appeared in one game and threw one incomplete pass.  Was viewed as a project and is learning the offense.  Did what was expected of him. The Jets will be eager to see how he performs in preseason.  Grade: B

(3-76) Anthony Schlegel, LB, Ohio State: Appeared in only four games and was in on one special teams tackle.  The fact that he was inactive so often was not a good sign.  Unless Schlegel shows vast improvement in his second season, he may be considered a wasted pick.  Grade: D

(3-97) Eric Smith, S, Michigan State: Hard hitting saw action in 15 games, making 27 tackles.  Played primarily in nickel and dime packages as well as some special teams.  Smith made two interceptions and he should continue to provide quality depth in 2007.  Grade: B

(4-103) Brad Smith, WR, Missouri: Made the transition from college quarterback to NFL wide receiver and showed promise.  He played in all 16 games making nine catches for 61 yards, rushing 18 times for 103 yards as well as returning one punt.  He also excelled on special teams.  It’s just a matter of time before the Jets have him throwing an option pass.  A lot of potential if the Jets can figure out how to best utilize him.  Grade: C

(4-117) Leon Washington, RB, Florida State: Led the Jets with 650 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns.  He also caught 25 passes for 270 more yards and returned 13 punts. Washington is an ideal change of pace back but at 5’8â€?, many scouts doubt he could be a workhorse.  So far, he has done everything asked of him.  Grade: B

(5-150) Jason Pociask, TE, Wisconsin: Injured his left shoulder early in training camp and was place on the IR for the season.  Grade: Incomplete

(6-189) Drew Coleman, DB, Texas Christian: Made 27 tackles and one sack while playing in all 16 games for the Jets.  Started three games but spent most of his time in nickel and dime packages and did a good job.  Grade: B

(7-220) Titus Adams, DE Nebraska: Spent most of the year on the Jets practice squad before being signed by the NY Giants in early December.  Did not appear in a regular season game.  Grade: F
